Square Foot Gardening - Cabbage

I decided to use the seeding square for all of my winter gardening this year, and while it took a while to get the hang of using this tool, I am starting to understand how best to apply it and what type of gardening it is best used for.  To me, the best use of this is for plants that can be planted close together, however it also is great for getting spacing for interplanting techniques as well.  For instance in this bed I planted leeks and chive in between the Napa cabbage and the white stem bok choy.  It allowed me to space things out perfectly and get some good coverage throughout all my bed.  So in this small 8'x4' raised bed, I was able to plant 72 mini bok choy, 40 white stem bok choy, and 40 Napa Cabbage.  granted I will have to thin these all out once they start growing too close together, but baby greens taste great and I dont think I would have gotten even half that planted if I did a row system.

Cabbages are cool weather vegetables. They can take a frost and freeze. It is planting time here in Maryland Zone 7 for all the cool weather crops. My cabbage transplants are ready and went in the raised bed. I also show you how I deal with snails and slugs using iron phosphate.
