Image
Carrot, Nantes Half Long - Burpee   Mid-19th century variety is easy to grow, slim, cylindrical, orange roots are 7" long, 1½" thick, require no peeling, and are packed with vitamins. A favorite variety thanks to its productivity, delicious flavor, and wide adaptability. Garden Hint: For a continuing harvest of flavorful roots, sow seeds in early spring, and keep at it. 70 days to maturity  Carrots can be sown early, after danger of heavy frost is over. Sow every two weeks thereafter for continuous harvest. Straight roots require soil that is light, loosened deeply, and free of stones, so prepare a carrot planting thoroughly. Consider using a soil amendment such as compost if your soil is heavy. Since seedlings have fine leaves it may be beneficial to plant radish along with your carrot seed. The radishes will be harvested well before carrots form and act as a guide to the carrot row. Seedlings emerge in 14-21 days. Thin carrot plants to stand 1 inch apart when seedlings are ...

(THIS POST IS DEDICATED TO JIM IN HIS RETIREMENT: "At the same time - I am keeping an open mind about what God may wish me to do. I have gifts of my own that aren't necessarily the same as the other deacon's. One of those is music." At some point Jim has mentioned that he likes to chant the Hours, but can't find anyone who is interested. MY VOCATION IN LIFE IS TO GIVE VISIONS. As planner in the mental health system, visions helped over a ten-year period to reshape our local mental health system into one that is more consumer friendly, using and celebrating their talents.  At the mental health board's annual dinner, a consumer achievement award recognizes their accomplishments. It was inaugurated by the board at my retirement as a way to honor my style of empowering consumers and to affirm their commitment to make that charism permanent in the system. When I came to our county mental health system, I was impressed by all the talented consumers that were involved...
