PSALM 143
PSALM 143
Lord, listen to my prayer: in your faithfulness turn your ear to my pleading;
PSALM 142:1-11Dómine, exáudi oratiónem meam,† áuribus pércipe obsecratiónem meam in veritáte tua;
VUC Psalm 142:1 Psalmus David, quando persequebatur eum Absalom filius
ejus.
DRA Psalm 142:
Domine, exaudi orationem meam; auribus percipe obsecrationem meam in
veritate tua; exaudi me in tua justitia.
1 Hear, O Lord, my prayer: give ear to my supplication in thy truth: hear
me in thy justice
2 Et non intres in judicium cum servo tuo, quia non
justificabitur in conspectu tuo omnis vivens.
3 Quia persecutus est
inimicus animam meam; humiliavit in terra vitam meam; collocavit me in
obscuris, sicut mortuos saeculi.
4 Et anxiatus est super
me spiritus meus; in me turbatum est cor meum.
5 Memor fui dierum
antiquorum; meditatus sum in omnibus operibus tuis: in factis manuum tuarum
meditabar.
6 Expandi manus meas ad
te; anima mea sicut terra sine aqua tibi.
7 Velociter exaudi me,
Domine; defecit spiritus meus. Non avertas faciem tuam a me, et similis ero
descendentibus in lacum.
8 Auditam fac mihi mane
misericordiam tuam, quia in te speravi. Notam fac mihi viam in qua ambulem,
quia ad te levavi animam meam.
9 Eripe me de inimicis
meis, Domine: ad te confugi.
10 Doce me facere
voluntatem tuam, quia Deus meus es tu. Spiritus tuus bonus deducet me in
terram rectam.
11 Propter nomen tuum,
Domine, vivificabis me: in aequitate tua, educes de tribulatione animam meam,
12 et
in misericordia tua disperdes inimicos meos, et perdes omnes qui tribulant
animam meam, quoniam ego servus tuus sum
.
2 And enter not into
judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight no man living shall be justified.
3 For the enemy hath
persecuted my soul: he hath brought down my life to the earth. He hath made
me to dwell in darkness as those that have been dead of old:
4 And my spirit is in
anguish within me: my heart within me is troubled.
5 I remembered the days
of old, I meditated on all thy works: I meditated upon the works of thy
hands.
6 I stretched forth my
hands to thee: my soul is as earth without water unto thee.
7 Hear me speedily, O
Lord: my spirit hath fainted away. Turn not away thy face from me, lest I be
like unto them that go down into the pit.
8 Cause me to hear thy
mercy in the morning; for in thee have I hoped. Make the way known to me,
wherein I should walk: for I have lifted up my soul to thee.
9 Deliver me from my
enemies, O Lord, to thee have I fled:
10 Teach me to do thy
will, for thou art my God. Thy good spirit shall lead me into the right land:
11 For thy name's sake,
O Lord, thou wilt quicken me in thy justice. Thou wilt bring my soul out of
trouble:
12 And in thy mercy
thou wilt destroy my enemies. And thou wilt cut off all them that afflict my
soul: for I am thy servant.

Themes: The Psalmist prays for mercy and deprecates judgment, remembers his persecutions, prays for deliverance, for God's quickening Spirit, And for the defeat of his adversaries. The Hebrew and all the versions attribute this Psalm to David; and the Vulgate, Septuagint, Ethiopic and Arabic state that it was composed on the rebellion of his son Absalom: nor is there anything in the Psalm that positively disagrees with this inscription. This is the last of the seven “penitential” psalms. (From the Adam Clarke Commentary, 1831)
In Judaism: Verse 2 is found in the Amidah (the Standing Prayer, which is central to the Jewish liturgy) during Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year. (Wikipedia)
In Christianity: In the Liturgy of the Hours, Psalm 143 is recited on the fourth Thursday of the four weekly cycle of liturgical prayers at Lauds (before sunrise), and every Tuesday night at Compline, which is the night prayer said right before going to sleep. (Wikipedia)
Nine hundred years ago, the Cathedral of Salisbury, England developed a unique form of chant and liturgy known as the “Use of Salisbury,” or “Sarum Use.” Differences from the Roman rite are both melodic (more florid in the Sarum) and textual (Elizabethan English rather than Latin). The best repository of Sarum Use tones is the St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter, from which Sarah has sung this psalm. Additional resources on Sarum Use plainsong at https://canticasacra.org.
