PSALM 137

PSALM 137

By the rivers of Babylon
  we sat and wept
  remembering Zion.

Super flúmina Babylónis, illic sédimus et flévimus,*
  cum recordarémur Sion.

VUC  Psalm 136:1 Psalmus David, Jeremiae.

Super flumina Babylonis illic sedimus et flevimus,
 Upon the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept:

cum recordaremur Sion.
when we remembered Sion:

In salicibus in medio ejus
On the willows in the midst thereof

suspendimus organa nostra:
we hung up our instruments.

quia illic interrogaverunt nos,

qui captivos duxerunt nos, verba cantionum;
 For there they that led us into captivity
required of us the words of songs.

et qui abduxerunt nos:
And they that carried us away, said:

Hymnum cantate nobis de canticis Sion.
Sing ye to us a hymn of the songs of Sion.

Quomodo cantabimus canticum Domini in terra aliena?
How shall we sing the song of the Lord in a strange land?

Si oblitus fuero tui, Jerusalem,
 If I forget thee, O Jerusalem,

oblivioni detur dextera mea.
 let my right hand be forgotten.

6 Adhaereat lingua mea faucibus meis,
 Let my tongue cleave to my jaws,
si non meminero tui;
if I do not remember thee

si non proposuero Jerusalem in principio laetitiae meae.
 If I make not Jerusalem the beginning of my joy.

7 Memor esto, Domine, filiorum Edom, in die Jerusalem
Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom, in the day of Jerusalem:

: qui dicunt: Exinanite, exinanite usque ad fundamentum in ea
Who say: Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof..
